INTRODUCTION:

 

A device is an incentive introduced into the method of teaching for the purpose of stimulating the pupil and developing understanding through experiencing. The basis for all learning is experience, and usually the most effective type of learning is gained by concrete, direct, first-hand experience. In directing the learning of the pupils through normal activities, the teacher will find that visual or audio-visual materials are useful.

 Audio-visual aids in the classroom can enhance teaching methods and improve student comprehension. Today's technology offers many choices to the informed educator who wishes to capitalize on a new generation's appetite for multimedia presentations. Lesson plans that incorporate the use of audio-visual aids should be consistent with curriculum objectives and not segued improperly.

There are different kinds of audi, visual and audio-visual aids that can be used to enhance the teaching learning experience. They include:-

EDUCATIONAL IMPLICATIONS:

Audio visual aids are important in education system. Audio visual aids are those devices which are used in classrooms to encourage teaching learning process and make it easier and interesting. Audio -visual aids are the best tool for making teaching effective and the best dissemination of knowledge .So there is no doubt that technical devices have greater impact and dynamic informative system. Audio visual aids are effective tool that”invest the past with an air of reality.”A.V aids provide the learners with realistic experience, which capture their attention and help in the understanding of the historical phenomena. They appeal to the mind through the visual auditory senses.(Jain,2004)There is a proverb that” if we hear we forget, if we see we remember, and if we do something we know it” so it means that use of A.V aids make teaching learning process more effective. As Kishore (2003) said “A.V aids stimulated thinking and understand.” The use of A.V aids in teaching learning process has multifarious values(Mohanty,2001).A.V aids give chance to speakers to make a more professional and consistent presentation. The teaching profession is filled with countless opportunities to enrich the academic lives of students, while some concepts and educational objectives will be easy for students to grasp, other will require you to think creatively to ensure that important learning objectives are met. Using A.V aids in teaching is one way to enhance lesson plans and give students additional ways to process subject information (Kunari, 2006).A.V aids are devices present unit of knowledge through auditory of visual stimuli both with a view to help learning. They concretize the knowledge to be presented and help in making learning experience apple real, living and vital. They supplement the work of the teacher and help in the study of the text books. The great educationist Comenius has well said: The foundation of all learning consists in representing clearly to the senses and sensible objects so they can be appreciated easily (Singh,2005).Thus the use of audio visual aids can create a lot of interest and make teaching- learning process more effective when these are coupled with good public speaking skills. 

ADVANTAGES:

(i) Best Motivators-They are the best motivators. Students work with more interest and zeal. They are more attentive.

(ii) Fundamental to Verbal Instructions-They help to reduce verbalism which is a major weakness of our schools. They convey the same meaning as words mean. They give clear concepts and thus help to bring accuracy in learning.

(iii) Clear Images-Clear images are formed when we see, hear, touch, taste and smell as our experiences are direct, concrete and more or less permanent. Learning through the senses becomes the most natural and consequently the easiest.

(iv) Help for special students- students with disabilities and special needs can learn better with these techniques.

 (v) Variety-Audio-Visual aids provide variety and provide different tool s in the hands of the teacher.

(vi) Freedom-The use of audio-visual aids provide various occasions for the pupil to move about, talk, laugh and comment upon without teacher’s restriction.

(vii) Opportunities to Handle and Manipulate-The use of audio-visual aids provide immense opportunities to the pupils to see, handle and manipulate things.

DISADVANTAGES

Though the audio visual aids have gained increasing popularity in the educational system, there are certain problems to be faced and solved. These are:

(i) Apathy of the Teacher-It has not yet been possible to convince the teacher that teaching with words alone is quite tedious, wasteful and ineffective.

(ii) Indifference of Students-The judicious use of teaching aids arouses interest but when used without a definite purpose they lose their significance and purpose.

(iii) Ineffectiveness of the Aids-lack of proper planning and lethargy of teacher as also without proper preparation, correct presentation, appropriate applica­tion and essential follow up work, the aids have not proved their usefulness.

(iv) Financial Hurdles-The Boards of audio-visual aids have been set up by central and state governments for chalking out interesting programmes for the popularisation of teaching aids but the lack of finances is not enabling them to do their best.

(v) Absence of Electricity-Most of the projectors cannot work without electric current and so the non-availability of electricity is creating a hurdle in the proper use of audio-visual aids.

(vi) Lack of Facilities for Training-More and more training colleges or specialised agencies should be opened to train teachers and workers in the use of audio-visual aids.

 (vii) Language Problems-Most of the education films available are in English and we need such films in Hindi and other Indian Languages.

CONCLUSION:

 According to the students surveys conducted, they find this method of teaching very effective. They said that if the topic shown to them are all related to their curriculum and gives them additional knowledge then they get more attracted towards this technology. It motivates students to attend lectures as they are very curious to see or hear what the teacher is going to show them in the upcoming class. They say by seeing animated effects, colourful presentation and hearing recording they are able to concentrate more in class. Audio-visual aids just like a coin, has two sides. The proper usage of the different aids can help to enrich the teaching learning experience. It can work to make education a joyful experience. It can also take away the attention of students from the topic that has to be learnt. Thus both the teacher and the learners should use them wisely.
